Whether it is to add volume or improve your lip structure, patients can choose how much lip volume they want, working together to get the desired look. Please do not be scared of heavy or ‘done’ lips that may pass you in the high street. I believe it is important to produce natural-looking, beautiful results, and would rather we take a cautious approach over a few sessions if you are hesitant about the outcome.
Lip enhancement
I prefer to use a cannula for most lip enhancement, meaning the entire procedure is done through only two needle pricks. This generally does not require local anaesthetic cream or a block. Some work, such as defining the lip edge, does require a traditional needle for which you will be offered a numbing cream. The procedure usually takes around ten minutes once we are set up and ready to go. It is common to have some swelling and redness after the treatment but this usually resolves after a few hours, and the results can be seen immediately. Expect some swelling the following day as the filler absorbs water, and for this to resolve over the following few days.
The treatment should last for around 6-12 months. I will monitor your progress and advise you to return to clinic after a couple of weeks to see how you are getting on and if you need a top up to achieve the best result. My preference is for temporary hyaluronic acid filler (Juvederm).
Dermal fillers
A mild anaesthetic cream is applied to the treatment area for your comfort prior to treatment. The dermal filler is injected into the skin beneath the wrinkle with a very fine needle.
It usually takes 20-40 minutes depending on the number of lines and wrinkles treated. Make-up can be applied straight away and you can carry on with your day. It is common to have some swelling and redness following the treatment but this usually resolves after a few hours and the results can be seen immediately.
The treatment should last for around 4 – 6 months. I monitor your progress and advise you return to clinic after a couple of weeks to see how you are getting on and whether you need a top up to achieve the best result.
Ask about your practitioner’s follow-up and top-up policy, the type of filler used and the reason for that choice. Most people prefer to make cautious subtle changes and top up if necessary, than to have an excessive result which they could be unhappy with.
